Last night a dozen eLearning bloggers and a dozen KM bloggers got together at the Tied House in San Jose to lift a few glasses of beer and to schmooze over our interests.
Adobe, which is making a big corporate push into eLearning, was kind enough to pick up the tab.
Some people agreed with my notion that eLearning and knowledge management are (or should be) the same thing. The two disciplilnes have the same objectives, so why shouldn’t they work together? A few dissenters agreed after I qualified the question with the assumption that the non-functional aspects of learning and KM first be removed. A few others said KM and eLearning were incompatible.
At least two eLearning honchos felt the KMers were talking down to them.
The session was the most informal of anything in either conference. It reinforced my basic beliefs that:
1. Conversation is the most effective learning technology on earth.
2. Beer improves conversation.
My take on the three hours we spent together is that it’s worthwhile to encourage the convergence of eLearning and KM.

Yes - unfortunately couldn’t be at DevLearn but I discovered that I was about to co-ordinate a project in the summer on blogs and wikis and by a chance conversation found out that our UK KM team was also about to do the same thing. So we joined forces, we had a lot of very helpful discussions about differences between what is learnt and what knowledge is simply acquired and how to distribute and find it.
We have produced more templates because we were able to provide KM team with wider range of feedback and helped consult on best practices for training people in using ‘things’ such as wikis, blogs.
We also saved the company the cost of a project.
Also able to provide people with wider perspective on how people are doing learning or knowledge management and we have extended conversations to global KM and US KM and other areas which is leading to some great collaboration.
Who knows what we could achieve with beer too
[...] Also got to meetup with Jay Cross at long last and was invited to his blogger beer bash. [...]
